Centro Cultural Internacional Oscar Niemeyer

The Brazilian writer Paulo Coelho chose the Niemeyer Center to hold the international celebrations of the 20th anniversary of his most famous work, The Alchemist, which has sold almost 65 million copies. Coelho participated in various events during his stay in Avilés, the most important being the interview with Jesús Quintero in the Palacio Valdés theatre. People from all over the world came to see this event and furthermore almost 40,000 people watched it on the author’s web site. To mark the end of his visit, Coelho inaugurated an exposition of The Alchemist and spent an hour with students of the Carreño Miranda Secondary School who took advantage of the opportunity to ask him questions about his life, his work and his view on life.
