The Bridge Project, directed by Sam Mendes, closed a successful world tour in Avilés. More than 2000 people attended the first theatrical production of the Niemeyer Center, which swept down from its first performance and repeated full house the other two days.
The Tempest, performed in English with supertitles, did not leave indifferent to an audience that enjoyedenjoyed the world of intrigue, fascination and mystery that only William Shakespeare knows how to transmit.

The English film director Sam Mendes took part in an event open to the public introduced by Inocencio Arias, former Spanish consul in Los Angeles and a great cinema expert.
During one and a half hours, Sam Mendes reviewed his professional career and assured to “feel more comfortable doing theatre than films” and also pointed that “people think that after being awarded an Oscar, one does not feel like shooting low-budget films, just big productions, and this is not completely true”.
By the end of the event, the public could ask questions to the guest.

On July 12th Hicham El Guerrouj, the Olympic champion and world record holder, took part in the first sports event to be organised by the Niemeyer Centre.
The athlete opened the act in Plaza de España, and greeted and talked to those young sportsmen who were present. After stretching, he began to run a race across Aviles, across Galiana, Parque de Ferrera and Rivero.
Once the race was over, El Guerrouj participated in an event open to the public, and he was interviewed by the journalist Carmen Menéndez and the athletics coach Juanjo Azpeitia. During the last part of the event, the young sportsmen could ask questions to the athlete.

María Pagés, flamenco and poetry at the Niemeyer Center
The flamenco dancer María Pagés perfomerd on April 23 at the Palacio Valdés Theater.
The Niemeyer Center continues to develop its pre-inaugural program. The flamenco singer and choreographer María Pagés offered her show “Flamenco y poesía” (Flamenco and Poetry). This was the first activity related to dance organized by the Oscar Niemeyer International Cultural Center and it took place a week after the visit of Kevin Spacey.

Kevin Spacey returned to Avilés a year after his first visit, and he came to do what he likes most: talking about theatre and explaining to those starting in this world where the secret of its magic is. The actor appeared on the stage of Palacio Valdés Theatre to share some time with young theatre students from all Asturias. During over an hour, Kevin Spacey answered various questions.
In a contagious good mood, he confessed that he keeps the Oscar received in 1996 next to the mixer, that Jack Lemonn predicted a promising future for him as an actor and that his preferences regarding actors and actresses have changed over the years. The exhibition was opened from December 15th to 23rd at Palacio de Valdecarzana. It displayed pictures taken by the photographer while visiting in 2008.
The 15th December, the Niemeyer Center opened the Oscar Niemeyer photography exhibition by Gorka Lejarcegi. It displayed 26 pictures selected by the author. It summarized the photographer’s stay in Rio de Janeiro in October 2008 while working on an article about Oscar Niemeyer. In total, nearly 1,000 people came to the exhibition.

Cinema director Alejandro Amenábar offered last Tuesday September 29 a cinema master class at Palacio Valdés Theater of Avilés. This event, organized by Niemeyer Center and Canal +, was opened to the public and recorded and broadcasted later on Taller Canal +. After the visit of Wim Wenders and Carlos Saura to Avilés, the US singer Barbara Hendricks was at the Niemeyer Center for the first classical music concert, following the Enrique Morente and Amancio Prada concerts. Classical music will be one of the referents, once the center is inaugurated.

Just over a year after its inauguration, the Niemeyer Center continued to schedule activities with the objective of attracting talent to Asturias. On this occasion, it was a musical affair starring a exceptional guest: the singer-songwriter, Amancio Prada.
The singer-songwriter from León, Amancio Prada, offered a concert on 28th November. Under the title "The Life of an Artist" and with songs by Léo Ferré, Prada covered the works of one of the most important figures of French music. Prada presented his album in Avilés two days prior to releasing it in Paris.

Fatema Mernissi, historian, writer, doctor in sociology and professor in the Mohammed V University of Rabat, is one of the most renowned intellects of Morocco and is especially known for defending women’s rights in addition to being a world authority on Koranic studies. She is currently studying the influence of new communication technologies on the birth of civil society in the Arabic world. "Love in the Islam of the Digital Era" was the topic of her conference in Avilés.
